Security and traffic-control crews share a problem most other vest customers don’t: they need to look both visible AND authoritative. A parking enforcement officer’s vest needs to read as “official” from 100 feet so drivers comply with directions. A flagger holding a STOP paddle needs ANSI 107 Class 3 visibility plus a clear visual identity that drivers trust. A uniformed event security team needs to be distinguishable from marshals, medical, and law enforcement. We design hi-vis vests for that exact intersection โ full ANSI 107 compliance, strong identification, and the professional aesthetic uniformed services need.
Why security and traffic-control crews need their own vest spec
This segment has four overlapping requirements that other industries don’t share.
Authority comes from visual consistency. A flagger in a generic yellow vest gets less compliance than a flagger in a vest clearly branded with a traffic-control firm name or city/agency seal. Drivers obey what looks official. Brand identification โ visible at 100 feet โ converts hi-vis compliance into operational effectiveness.
Class 3 is standard for traffic control near vehicles. Any worker directing or stopping traffic on roads above 25 mph needs Class 3 under most state codes. MUTCD ยง6E.02 specifies that flaggers shall be conspicuously visible from a minimum distance of 1000 feet โ that’s a Class 3 spec, not Class 2.
Identification by role matters within security firms. A multi-officer event security firm typically deploys: supervisors, perimeter, crowd-flow, parking, and incident-response. Each role benefits from distinct identification โ color, back-panel text, or sleeve hits. We support per-role identification under one PO at no upcharge.
Uniformed services need professional aesthetics. Security firms compete on perceived professionalism. A clean, well-designed vest with proper logo placement and consistent reflective configuration affects how clients evaluate the firm. We design with the same care a uniformed-services brand would expect โ not a promotional-vendor look.
How we design security and traffic-control vests
Material. 100% polyester solid-tricot, 5.5 oz/sq yd, for the more professional silhouette. Mesh available for indoor crowd-management security where heat is dominant. For flagging crews, tricot is the standard โ survives long sun-exposure shifts better than mesh.
Class. Class 3 for flagging, traffic control, and outdoor parking enforcement on roads. Class 2 for indoor event security and crowd management.
Reflective tape. 360ยฐ banding for Class 3, with sleeve tape. 2″ mid-torso for Class 2. We use 3M Scotchlite or arc-rated equivalent depending on job spec.
Closure. Heavy-duty zipper front with storm flap. Some agencies prefer hook-and-loop for quick on-off over duty belts and body armor; we support both.
Decoration.
- Screen print for single-color firm or agency names at runs of 250+.
- Heat transfer for multi-color firm logos and badge designs (most security firms have multi-color branding).
- Embroidered sewn-on patches for back-panel role identification (“SECURITY,” “FLAGGER,” “PARKING ENFORCEMENT,” “EVENT STAFF”).
- Photoluminescent or contrasting text options for incident-response and night-only crews.
Brand identification. Standard layout: firm or agency logo on left chest (3″ ร 2″), large-text role identifier on upper back (12″ wide ร 3″ tall โ “SECURITY,” “FLAGGER,” “EVENT STAFF”). Optional: officer name embroidery, badge number, or radio call sign.
Equipment integration. Many security vests need to work over duty belts, body armor (Level II/IIIa carriers), or radio harnesses. We can spec a slightly longer cut to accommodate carrier-over-vest configuration, or a shorter cut for over-armor wear. Specify in the quote.
What to send us
- Vector firm or agency logo
- Role-by-role quantity (e.g., “200 standard security, 30 supervisor, 40 flagger, 20 parking enforcement”)
- Class 2 or Class 3 by role
- Whether vests are worn over body armor, duty belts, or with radio harnesses
- Indoor, outdoor, or mixed deployment
- Standard placement (chest + back) or extended (sleeves, sash configurations)
- State or municipal compliance requirements (some cities mandate specific traffic-control vest configurations)
Typical order sizes and pricing tiers
| Quantity | Typical security/traffic-control use case |
|---|---|
| 50โ99 vests | Small local security firm, small flagging operation |
| 100โ249 vests | Mid-size security firm, regional traffic-control firm |
| 250โ499 vests | Large regional security firm, county-level enforcement |
| 500โ999 vests | Multi-state security firm, large traffic-control program |
| 1,000โ2,499 vests | National security firm annual replenishment |
| 2,500โ9,999 vests | National traffic-control firm or municipal enforcement program |
| 10,000+ vests | National multi-agency contract, direct manufacturing pricing |
Pricing scales similarly to other segments. Class 3 commands a ~15โ25% premium per vest over Class 2 at the same quantity. Multi-color decoration adds 8โ15% over single-color at the same quantity.
Lead time and reorder cadence
First order: 3โ4 weeks. No lead-time difference between Class 2 and Class 3.
Reorders: 2 weeks from confirmation. Security firms with high turnover typically reorder quarterly to cover new-hire onboarding and replacement.
New-officer onboarding programs: For firms with structured monthly or bi-weekly onboarding classes, we offer monthly-draw structures against an annual master PO. Sizing flexibility: we hold a small buffer per size at the warehouse for last-minute swap-outs.
Replacement cycles. Security vests in active outdoor use last 8โ14 months depending on shift density and sun exposure. Indoor event-security vests last 18โ24 months. Plan replenishment accordingly.
FAQ
Will your vests meet my state’s traffic-control code? Our Class 3 vests meet MUTCD requirements, which most states adopt by reference. Some states have additional requirements (specific reflective tape placement, mandatory back-panel text). Send us your state DOT spec sheet with the quote and we’ll match it.
Can I get a vest that works over body armor? Yes. Specify “over-armor configuration” in the quote and we’ll spec a wider cut. We can also produce a vest with hook-and-loop side adjusters for fit-over-armor flexibility.
Do you offer outerwear (Class 3 jackets)? Yes โ Class 3 hi-vis softshell and rain jackets for security and traffic-control crews. Not on the public site; quote on request.
Can I get a vest that’s not yellow-green or orange-red? For ANSI 107 compliance, no โ those are the only acceptable fluorescent background colors. For non-compliant identification vests (e.g., navy with reflective tape for “command” or “supervisor” indoor-only roles), yes, with clear labeling that they’re not ANSI-compliant for traffic-exposure work.
Do you produce vests for municipal traffic-control programs? Yes โ many cities and counties order through us for parking enforcement, school crossing guards, and special-event traffic management. We accept municipal POs and offer Net 30 to verified agencies.
Can you produce vests with photoluminescent text for night security? Yes โ limited options for photoluminescent decoration on hi-vis polyester. Best used for “NIGHT” or “K-9” style identification panels. Quote on request.
What about K-9 unit vests? We’ve produced K-9 handler vests with role-specific identification (K-9, “DOG TEAM,” handler name). Standard Class 2 or Class 3 spec; K-9 vest itself (for the dog) is not in our product line but we can refer.
Do you support multi-client uniformed-services firms with per-client branding? Yes. Many of our largest security customers serve multiple clients (corporate campuses, retail centers, etc.) and need per-client branded vests. We support per-client artwork variations under one master order with consolidated billing.
